Uncle Vanya
by Anton Chekhov
Adapted by Andrew Upton

On a dilapidated, remote farm Uncle Vanya and his niece Sonya have worked slavishly to sustain an estate in decline. And so it has been for years.

Now Professor Serebryakov and his beautiful young wife, Yelena, have returned to visit. Adding to the chaos and disruption are the constant visits of the charismatic Astrov. Lunch is no longer served at lunch time - now it is procrastinated until dusk - work is forgotten and the long, cool nights have become sleepless.

From this hotbed of disarray grow three consuming love affairs, each of which is destined to wither in disappointment before it has reached bloom.

It is in this climate of frustration and hopelessness that the Professor chooses to unveil his shocking plan to sell the estate. Faced with an uncertain future, Vanya is provoked into an act of violence which is as humiliatingly unsuccessful as his attempts at romance.

Gliding effortlessly between comedy and tragedy, this treasured classic from Anton Chekhov lays bare the fruitlessness of human endeavour with exceptional warmth, humour and insight.

The Wharf Revue
Not Quite Out of The Woods

Written and created by Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott

The people have spoken and no-one has a clue what they’re banging on about. So it's time to join The Wharf Revue team in an orgy of pointless recrimination and hilariously ill-informed party-political punditry as they present a parade of pompous, opinionated pedants practiced in puerile partisan point-scoring. And alliteration.

Watch in startling 1-D as the heroic Abbottar infiltrates the marginal electorates and becomes one with the Mar’gi, a forgotten race of fringe dwellers who fight to stop the boats and strip-mine the magical forests.

Follow Red Riding Hood as she tries to navigate through the factional deadwood, aided by Bob Brown – the woodcutter who can’t cut down anything.

Stumble upon a forest glade, where proud Kristina and her Unpopular Mechanicals rehearse their next charade for the long-suffering citizens of NSW.

Follow the Japanese wha – sorry, scientists – as they hunt for the fish John West rejects, when Moby Dick meets the Iron Chef!

Join Sarah Palin for a mad tea party, vote for your favourite dysfunctional economy in the Eurodivision Sovereign-Debt Song Contest or quietly die inside as Mark Latham hosts “Hey, Hey, It's Yesterday!”

Who said fairy tales can’t come true?

The Trial
adapted by Louise Fox
from the novel by Franz Kafka

Josef K is in trouble with a capital T. He’s been accused of something and no one will tell him exactly what. Despite his adamant protestations of innocence, K finds himself swept up on an inexorable tide of bureaucracy, dragged adrift by strange forces that are invisible, threatening and unstoppable. He knows that the law court is intent on punishing guilt but just what ‘guilt’ is is growing ever more ambiguous.

Once a confident, obsessive and hardworking bank clerk, when K becomes embroiled in this surreal, utterly frustrating and inescapable court trial, he begins to transform into an entirely different person. The memories of airless, claustrophobic rooms haunt him wherever he goes and court offi cials appear from the darkest corners of the most unexpected places. Slowly, gradually, his composed demeanour is eroded and - as the world around him becomes increasingly nightmare-like - reality slips from his grasp.

The indefinable, elusive and mysterious power of Franz Kafka’s writing is captured in Louise Fox’s brand new adaptation of his landmark novel. Revelling in Kafka’s wit, clowning, farce and obsession with the erotic, this production, directed by Matthew Lutton, marks our second collaboration with his celebrated Perth-based company ThinIce, and features John Gaden and Ewen Leslie.

Long Day's Journey Into Night
by Eugene O'Neill

In this magnificent Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Eugene O’Neill (Mourning Becomes Electra, Desire Under The Elms) paints a vivid and disturbing portrait of a family tormented by the past and paralysed by the prospect of the future.

Actor James Tyrone (William Hurt), his wife Mary (Robyn Nevin) and their two adult sons James and Edmund, have retreated to their Connecticut holiday house where they will be ensconced for the summer. During the course of the ‘long day’ of the play’s title this family battles to unearth, and conceal, a series of appalling truths.

Tyrone towers over the family, his endless disappointment in his sons fuelling their alcoholism and propelling a vicious rivalry between them. Against doctor’s orders, Edmund drinks with abandon, drowning his sorrows as he awaits the results of a crucial medical examination. Meanwhile all three men monitor Mary’s every move, intent on protecting her from her own terrible addiction.

Rarely staged in Australia but frequently considered O’Neill’s major masterpiece, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, is a largely autobiographical work of gut-wrenching honesty and astonishing beauty. In celebration of the play’s enormous thematic and emotional landscape, this production will unfold on the grand stage of Sydney Theatre before transferring to Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Oregon.

Measure for Measure
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Benedict Andrews

Tis one thing to be tempted, Escalus,
Another thing to fall.

This is a permissive, decaying city with a dysfunctional government, and the Duke has mysteriously gone on leave. In his place he’s appointed a man whose “urine is congealed ice” – the austere moralist Angelo. His first act of law is to apply the death penalty for fornication: Claudio is the first to be condemned. But when Isabella arrives to beg for her brother’s life, her pleas threaten to bring Angelo and the state to their knees.

Measure for Measure is Shakespeare’s great dark comedy about desire and power. His world is familiar: sex is a commodity, government is subject to the leader’s moral whimsy, extreme liberality goes head to head with emergency powers to constrain and punish. And lurking in the shadows of this play is the idea that real wisdom comes from unleashed chaos.

Benedict Andrews was last at Belvoir St in 2007 with his brilliant production of
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. He’s returned to tackle a play he’s probably born to direct: Shakespeare’s magnificent and explicit meditation on anarchy and authority.

Theatre for the open-minded.

Sydney Theatre Company presents The Residents in

Oresteia
by Aeschylus, in a new adaptation by Tom Wright

A flickering light appears on the horizon. A fire. A sign!

After ten years of fighting in Troy - ten years during which Argos has been suspended in time, awaiting word of victory or defeat, awaiting the return of its men – the beacon glows on the horizon signaling a victorious end to the war.

Inside the palace Clytemnestra eagerly awaits the homecoming of her triumphant king Agamemnon. Outwardly her demeanor is one of joy and elation but a dark rage underlies the sweet smiles of jubilation. As her husband sails home Clytemnestra prepares to exact a horrifying revenge on the man who, in order to win this war, sacrificially slit the throat of his own daughter.

A curse has fallen upon the House of Aetreus: blood will be shed, familial bonds betrayed and social order disintegrated before the blight on it is lifted.

This momentous and epic Greek tragedy, adapted and directed by Tom Wright, has been condensed into one heart-stopping evening of theatre. Our permanent ensemble of actors – The Residents – will excavate Aeschylus’ powerful tale of justice and revenge, injecting new life into one of the bedrocks of Western theatrical tradition.

Bell Shakespeare presents

King Lear
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Marion Potts
Featuring John Bell

A father in his twilight years divides his assets between his three daughters. She who loves him most will gain the most. Goneril and Regan are more than happy to flatter him so they share the spoils. Cordelia, his youngest and favourite, is too honest for her own good. Furious, he disowns her and sends her away. Betrayed by the elder two who have all he once owned, Lear is left destitute. Still blinded by pride and vanity, it’s not until Cordelia returns to save him that he realises his catastrophic mistake and recognises true love. But is it too late?

One of the greatest works in Western literature, King Lear is an epic story of power, loyalty, jealousy and betrayal, and a profoundly moving study of human frailty and the nature of love.

Celebrate the 20th year of Bell Shakespeare as John Bell leads some of Australia’s most respected actors and exciting new talent in Marion Potts’ richly poetic production.

Sydney Theatre Company in association with Frantic Assembly presents

Stockholm
by Bryony Lavery

Today is Todd’s birthday. Tomorrow he and Kali will fly to Stockholm to celebrate.

This morning they awoke wrapped in each other’s arms, ate a late breakfast, drank coffee, watched an arthouse film and shared a packet of Maltesers. It’s spring but today felt like summer. It was that good.

Now they’re home, cooking dinner in their exquisite and tastefully furnished kitchen.

Hidden away from the world, their families, friends and love rivals, they are at their happiest. However, their immaculate kitchen is as dangerous as it is beautiful. As the meal is prepared the probability of them ever reaching the first course gradually decreases. Slowly and painfully these impossible lovers will consume one another.

Groundbreaking British physical theatre company, Frantic Assembly, will remount their lauded production of Bryony Lavery’s Stockholm with Sydney Theatre Company. Featuring Australian actors Socratis Otto and Leeanna Walsman, this mesmerisingly powerful piece of theatre uses a unique approach that draws on dance, music and text to dramatise a relationship that is founded on co-dependency, obsession and abuse.

Sydney Theatre Company and The Border Project present

Vs Macbeth
(most of it) by William Shakespeare

Screw your courage to the sticking place. We’re about to tempt fate.

For centuries, Shakespeare’s most dangerous tragedy has spawned a legacy of theatrical superstition. In this radical version of Macbeth The Residents team up with Adelaide’s The Border Project (Highway Rock’n’Roll Disaster) to tackle the curse head-on.

Accidents will happen. Everything that goes wrong from the first rehearsal to the final curtain will be included in the show. Minor errors, major catastrophes, 400 years of historical misfortunes unleashed in a space wilfully haunted by theatrical no-no’s, live animals, broken ladders, and a lightning machine. This volatility is a platform for the doomed story of Macbeth, and a certifiable mutiny of our contemporary desire to get Shakespeare right. What could possibly go wrong?

Direct from the Adelaide Festival to Wharf 2, don’t miss The Residents’ first production in 2010.

Opera Australia presents

Tosca
by Giacomo Puccini

New Production

A SHABBY LITTLE SHOCKER – that’s how one critic described one of Puccini’s best-loved operas. Why? Maybe because when we thrill to the glorious music we forget the reality: a tragic tale of political persecution, rape and murder. In this first new production of Tosca in almost 30 years, director Christopher Alden reminds us with a bold and unflinching vision.

FLORIA TOSCA AND HER LOVER Mario Cavaradossi are embroiled in a plot to help a friend escape from prison. Baron Scarpia, the chief of police, is determined to extract the truth from Cavaradossi, and a kiss – and the rest – from Tosca. Will she sacrifice herself to save her lover?

I LIVED FOR ART, I LIVED FOR LOVE...
Tosca’s famous aria is one of opera’s greatest moments. Hear the soaring voices of Takesha Meshé Kizart and Nicole Youl as Tosca, alongside a cast of stars including John Wegner, Rosario La Spina, Carlo Barricelli and Warwick Fyfe plus the unforgettable Opera Australia Chorus.
