Sydney Opera House presents the Vienna Schauspielhaus production of

Barrie Kosky's
Poppea

After triumphant, sell-out seasons in Vienna, Berlin and the Edinburgh International Festival, it is now Sydney's turn to experience Poppea.

Barrie Kosky's contemporary remix of Monteverdi's operatic masterpiece, The Coronation of Poppea, blends Baroque music with tango, klezmer and jazz, fluidly merging 400 years of musical history. The songs of Cole Porter are woven through the opera to create a show that defies description: Opera meets Musical meets Erotic Revue!

The goddess of love Amor encourages the romance between the Emperor Nero and his mistress Poppea, despite his existing marriage. Sex, passion and politics ensure the path to this union is bloody, passionate and sexy.

This radical version of the original opera is sung, spoken, whispered and screamed by the astonishing original Viennese cast.

Cole Porter meets Monteverdi by way of burlesque.
