Macbeth

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY JOHN BELL
WITH SEAN O'SHEA AND LINDA CROPPER

A metaphysical tale of ambiguity, shape-shifting and things not as they seem, director John Bell strips back Shakespeare's most haunting thriller to its core and asks: from where does the evil within come? Is it the witches? The devil? His own lingering demons? Or is the successful, young Macbeth the devil himself inside?

Driven by an insatiable hunger for power, posterity and certainty, Macbeth and his wife commit a murder and set in motion the inevitable unravelling of their own humanity. With blood on their hands, they face the dire consequences of the natural order disturbed. And the questions demand an answer.

Sean O’Shea and Linda Cropper play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in this new production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece. A terrifying portrayal of moral collapse, Bell Shakespeare’s Macbeth will take you on an intense and compelling journey.

Opera on the Big Screen

10 March 2007, 7.30pm
Presenter: Opera Australia and Sydney Opera House
Venue: Forecourt

FREE live site relay of La traviata on the steps of the Sydney Opera House

Experience Opera on the Big Screen as a live performance of Opera Australia’s La traviata is relayed into the Forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. Join host, ABC Classic FM breakfast presenter Paul Bevan as the curtain goes up on one of the world’s favourite operas.

With its melting arias and stirring choruses, Verdi’s La traviata is everything grand opera should be: extravagant, passionate and devastatingly romantic. Conducted by Tom Woods with Kate Ladner as Violetta and exciting Australian tenor Aldo di Toro as Alfredo.

It is no surprise when Alfredo Germont falls in love with Paris’s favourite courtesan, Violetta Valéry. The surprise comes when she finds herself falling in love with him. Could this be the start of a happy ending? Sadly opera, like life, is rarely that simple.

Oh squiggly line

Oh squiggly line, in my eye fluid.
I see you there, lurking on the periphery of my vision.
But when I try to look at you, you scurry away.
Are you shy, squiggly line?
Why only when I ignore you, do you return to the centre of my eye?
Oh squiggly line, it's alright, you are forgiven.

Sweeney Todd

Stephen Sondheim’s musicals have thrilled audiences on Broadway and in London’s West End. Now it is time for one of his funniest creations, Sweeney Todd, to return to Sydney for another hair-raising, rib-tickling, stomach-turning run. It might not be opera, but Sondheim’s hugely accessible score treats this story of murder and passion – not to mention pies – with an emotional immediacy and comic flair that Mozart himself would applaud.

Business is brisk for barber Sweeney Todd, aka Benjamin Barker returned convict. But the gentlemen who visit his shop in Fleet Street, just above lovely Mrs Lovett's Pies, do not realise they are under the knife of a man whose heart is blistered with tragedy. A sharp razor plus a lust for revenge and a shortage of meat downstairs equals blood, and it's not just a shaving cut.
