Gross und Klein (Big and Small)
A Journey across contemporary Germany
by Botho Strauss
English text by Martin Crimp
Whisking us down a rabbit hole and into a wonderland-like world, Gross und Klein (Big and Small) transports us to a hotel dining room in Morocco where Lotte sits alone. She is all dressed up with nowhere to go. There is no one to chat to. Her siesta tour group is ‘at odds’ so she declines to join their excursions. She hasn’t the money to pay for them anyway. For now she will sit alone, listening to the men arguing outside the window, stoically cheerful in the hope that someone, somewhere will need her help or affection.
Here begins an exquisite sequence of scenes in which the courageously optimistic and perpetually disappointed Lotte searches for human connection. She is rejected by her husband, unrecognised by old friends and unfamiliar with her family. Even Lotte’s acquaintances won’t admit to being acquainted with her. Whether she is outside a window peeping in or buzzing on an unanswered intercom this iconic protagonist never quite fits. Like Carroll’s Alice, sometimes Lotte is too big for her surroundings, sometimes too small to be noticed within them.

The Australian Ballet presents
Romeo & Juliet
Romeo & Juliet is perhaps the greatest love story ever told – but it hasn’t been told by one of Australia’s greatest storytellers. Until now.
Graeme Murphy (Swan Lake, Nutcracker) adds another ballet classic to his list of audacious reinventions with this much-anticipated world premiere season. Traversing time and place, Murphy’s ballet follows “a feisty girl and a feisty boy who are willing to take a stand for their love.” Young passion smoulders at its core, but Murphy also tackles the consequences of greed, war, and what happens to humanity when love dies. Of course, a grand story demands grand surrounds, and who better to create the costumes than Australian fashion luminary Akira Isogawa. What do they have in store for our two star-crossed lovers? You’ll have to wait and see. Romeo & Juliet promises to be a masterpiece from first blush to final devastation.

Bell Shakespeare presents
Julius Caesar
BY William Shakespeare
DIRECTED BY Peter Evans
To see the future one must only look to the past. Like many who came before him, and after him, Julius Caesar had the support of the people but the loathing of the players.
They conspired. They persuaded. They whispered it was for the good of the country. All they needed to succeed was Brutus. Poor patriotic Brutus. He was like a son to Caesar and a poster boy for the republic. But not even a front-man of such unimpeachable integrity could avert the total and utter disaster their daggers set in motion.
Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Artistic Director, takes this momentous piece of Roman history and transports it to the corridors of backroom politics. This time, when Caesar gets the axe, it’s the media who roar like an angry mob. This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between our intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from office.

Bell Shakespeare presents
Faustus
After Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
Adapted and directed by Michael Gow
Faustus is a brilliant man. A scholar. But there’s smart and then there’s smart. In his insatiable thirst for knowledge, Faustus goes in search of magic. But when he summons the evil Mephistophilis, we soon learn the limits of his mortal comprehension.
Faustus tries to make Mephistophilis his servant, but Mephistophilis works only for the Devil. Blinded by greed, Faustus proposes a trade: his soul in exchange for 24 years with Mephistophilis.
The Devil says yes.
The cooling-off period expires. The contract is binding. Suddenly, Faustus is headed for an eternity of horror with no clause for salvation.
Starring John Bell as Mephistophilis and Ben Winspear as Faustus, Michael Gow’s startling adaptation of Christopher Marlowe’s play takes a closer look at temptation and the price we pay for instant gratification.

The White Guard
by Mikhail Bulgakov
In a new version by Andrew Upton
Few citizens of the Soviet Union would have been audacious or foolhardy enough to write a letter of complaint to Stalin but in 1930 writer Mikhail Bulgakov did just that. After years of being harassed by the Communist censors, Bulgakov requested employment in a theatre or permission to leave the country. Although Stalin isn’t generally remembered for receiving complaints affably, Bulgakov received a personal telephone call in which the dictator suggested he apply for a job in one of the state theatres. Stalin was a fan of The White Guard. So much so he had been to see it over 15 times.
Stalin’s enthusiasm was matched by the Russian people’s and the play’s early success is testimony to its brilliance. It is a drama that has endured the test of time and its most recent revival, at London’s National Theatre last year, received 5-star reviews in which Andrew Upton’s adaptation of the play was described as "Thrilling, darkly comic and often deeply moving..." by The Daily Telegraph (UK). In 2011 we mount our own production of Andrew’s adaptation of The White Guard.
Set in the Ukraine, where the Russian Revolution is sweeping towards Kiev, the play follows the Turbin family as they gather in their home to prepare for the Bolsheviks’ arrival. With the city in chaos, the time has come for its residents to fight or flee. Turbin brothers Alexi and Nikolai have resolved to stay and fight for The White Guard but with Russia broken up into pieces, battling to pull it back together will not be a straightforward task.
As the men ready themselves for the fight, their consistently pragmatic sister Lena strives to maintain calm and order in a home as chaotic as the streets outside. Friends dash in, opportunistic suitors swing by and a sweet, bumbling family member descends unannounced. However, amid all of these arrivals, Lena will also be confronted with a painful and conspicuous departure...

Bell Shakespeare presents
Much Ado About Nothing
By William Shakespeare
Directed by John Bell
Experience Shakespeare’s most loved romantic comedy. With its unique charm and quick wit, Bell Shakespeare’s production of Much Ado About Nothing takes place in Sicily in the 1950’s against a backdrop of iron rules of behavior, family pride, vendettas and the notion of male honour.
Claudio and Hero are deeply in love. Beatrice and Benedick are deeply in denial. All is well. Then Claudio humiliates Hero. Hero has a fainting attack and pretends to die. And Beatrice and Benedick join forces with a vengeance. And that’s just up to the interval.
If it sounds complicated, well, that’s love for you – a trip down the aisle is never a straight one. When you delve into other people’s relationships you soon learn the real cost of commitment – what we will do and what we won’t do for that capricious and often elusive state of love.
John Bell directs this exuberant comedy with a lightness of touch and a fantastic cast including Blazey Best, Toby Schmitz, Max Gillies and Tony Llewellyn-Jones.

Belvoir St Theatre presents
The Wild Duck
By Simon Stone with Chris Ryan after Henrik Ibsen
Director Simon Stone
Are there some truths it’s better not to know?
Hjalmar Ekdal’s father was rich until scandal cast the family into poverty. Now he lives in a tiny flat with his father, his wife Gina and his daughter Hedvig. And a duck. And there’s about to be a new member of the household. Gregers Werle has just returned to town with some unfinished business that could shatter the little world Hjalmar has built around himself.
Over the past few years, Simon Stone has been excavating Ibsen’s array of brutal and tender tragedies and reconstructing them for the modern stage. The process has already brought about The Only Child in the Downstairs Theatre in 2009. Now it’s The Wild Duck’s turn.
Stone has transplanted Ibsen’s characters into the contemporary world in a new play tailor-made for an astonishing cast. This bittersweet portrait of family dysfunction, deception and denial will resound for a new age in Belvoir’s first show of the 2011 season.
