And there’s about to be a new member of the household. Gregers Werle has just returned to town with some unfinished business that could shatter the little world Hjalmar has built around himself.
Over the past few years, Simon Stone has been excavating Ibsen’s array of brutal and tender tragedies and reconstructing them for the modern stage. The process has already brought about The Only Child in the Downstairs Theatre in 2009. Now it’s The Wild Duck’s turn.
Stone has transplanted Ibsen’s characters into the contemporary world in a new play tailor-made for an astonishing cast. This bittersweet portrait of family dysfunction, deception and denial will resound for a new age in Belvoir’s first show of the 2011 season.

Once a confident, obsessive and hardworking bank clerk, when K becomes embroiled in this surreal, utterly frustrating and inescapable court trial, he begins to transform into an entirely different person. The memories of airless, claustrophobic rooms haunt him wherever he goes and court offi cials appear from the darkest corners of the most unexpected places. Slowly, gradually, his composed demeanour is eroded and - as the world around him becomes increasingly nightmare-like - reality slips from his grasp.

Long Day's Journey Into Night

In this magnificent Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Eugene O’Neill (Mourning Becomes Electra, Desire Under The Elms) paints a vivid and disturbing portrait of a family tormented by the past and paralysed by the prospect of the future.
Actor James Tyrone (William Hurt), his wife Mary (Robyn Nevin) and their two adult sons James and Edmund, have retreated to their Connecticut holiday house where they will be ensconced for the summer. During the course of the ‘long day’ of the play’s title this family battles to unearth, and conceal, a series of appalling truths.
Tyrone towers over the family, his endless disappointment in his sons fuelling their alcoholism and propelling a vicious rivalry between them. Against doctor’s orders, Edmund drinks with abandon, drowning his sorrows as he awaits the results of a crucial medical examination. Meanwhile all three men monitor Mary’s every move, intent on protecting her from her own terrible addiction.
Rarely staged in Australia but frequently considered O’Neill’s major masterpiece, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, is a largely autobiographical work of gut-wrenching honesty and astonishing beauty. In celebration of the play’s enormous thematic and emotional landscape, this production will unfold on the grand stage of Sydney Theatre before transferring to Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Oregon.
