An affected paradise

An oasis in the city's heart,
For its parched inhabitants.
See. The blacks, greys and blues of the office suit.
Hear. The chatter of abrasive mouths on mobile phones.
Smell. The odorous poison of cigarettes.
Taste. The artificiality of sweetened drinks.
Feel. The faceless throngs brush rudely past.
See. The flashes of feathery fire.
Hear. The natural symphony of the finest orchestra.
Smell. The heady perfume of flora exotica.
Taste. The spice of life.
Feel. And be touched in return.
The Royal Botanic Gardens, an affected paradise.

The above abbreviated version of my poem, An affected paradise, has been certified as a semi-finalist in poetry.com's International Open Poetry Contest by the Selection Committee, which carries the chance to win one of 104 cash or gift prizes - including the $1,000.00 Grand Prize, and also the $10,000.00 Annual Grand Prize.

In addition, An affected paradise will be published on its own page in poetry.com's Poetry Anthology, Eternal Portraits, scheduled for publication in Winter 2005.

As a poet chosen for publication, I will also be eligible to attend, by formal invitation, The International Society of Poet's Spring Convention and Symposium, to be held in Orlando, Florida, from February 25-27, 2005.

The unabridged original version of An affected paradise, which was submitted to the ISS Creative Eyes Competition held by University of New South Wales International Student Services, was shortlisted as a finalist entry and awarded a prize for merit, winning a travel voucher.
