Rabbit
by Nina Raine
It’s Bella’s birthday. Next year she'll be thirty (God forbid). Her father’s dying in hospital. Her ex-boyfriend is a psychological bully. None of her closest friends really know each other, but she's decided to herd them all down to her local for a party. Things are going badly enough, until an old flame joins the fray...
Pulled from pillar to post by thoughts and memories of her dying father and the torture of her vacuous twenty-something life, Rabbit explores the emotional minefield of becoming an adult. Over the course of the alcohol-fuelled evening the characters are peeled back in a torrent of acid one-liners.
Rabbit, the ferociously funny first play by Nina Raine, was produced in London in 2007 to rave reviews and was awarded the Evening Standard Award for Best New Play and the London Critics’ Circle Award.

Z is for Z Zegna, the new, very masculine fragrance by Ermenegildo Zegna
An irreverent attitude, a sensual energy… the Z Zegna man values style, freedom, authenticity.
A modern man, he loves fashion, art, technology, the cities and their movement.
He has a passion for liberty, the open roads, motorbikes, speed and travels.
He is a free spirit. He draws his strength, authenticity and personality from his homeland: Italy, the Mediterranean.
He likes beautiful fabrics, true materials: the suppleness of leather, the softness of wool, the purity of metal, the sensation of their contact on his skin.
He is sporty, self confident, incredibly sensual.
For this irresistible charmer, Zegna has created Z Zegna.
A fragrance of style, sport and seduction.
A fragrance in his own image.

The Pig Iron People
By John Doyle
In the tradition of Patrick White's suburban satires, John Doyle, one of our great contemporary commentators, has written his first play.
Set on a quiet suburban street with not quite enough parking for the residents, The Pig Iron People examines two generations and the way the politics of their time (and the politics of their carparking) have shaped them.
Nick, a young man wanting to reinvent himself and find his voice as a writer, moves in to Liberal Street. It is 1996, the day of John Howard's first election victory. Looking for solitude, he ends up falling in love with April, a young actress, and striking up a bumpy but finally genuine relationship with his nosy, cantankerous old neighbours.
These are the Pig Iron People of the title, the generation who grew up under Menzies. Without realising it, he and April will be growing up under Honest John. Relaxed and comfortable? Great, but every day? All the time? And when you are not...?
Characterised by Doyle's tangential humour which brilliantly illuminates the hearts of his characters, The Pig Iron People is a timely satire infused with profound tolerance for the foibles of humanity.

My Fair Lady
Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Lowe
For Henry Higgins, professor of linguistics and confirmed misogynist, transforming a streeturchin into a lady is a trivial task, done to honour a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering. Until, of course, he meets the proud little cockney, Eliza Doolittle, and finds that his raw material might not be so easy to mould. Lerner and Loewe’s exuberant adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion was always destined to be a smash hit.
The irascible Henry Higgins, the irresistible Eliza Doolittle, and the glorious succession of show-stopping numbers from ‘I Could Have Danced All Night ’ to ‘Get Me to the Church On Time’ propelled this classic story into Broadway history.
Now My Fair Lady comes to Australia in a new production from the team that created The Pirates of Penzance.
Expect extravagant sets, outstanding performances, a virtuosic chorus and a veritable fashion parade of costumes.
In his musical theatre debut, acclaimed British film actor Richard E. Grant stars as Henry Higgins with one of Opera Australia’s brightest young talents, Taryn Fiebig, as Eliza. Nancye Hayes, who danced in the original Australian production at the start of her illustrious music theatre career, now joins the cast as the acerbic Mrs Higgins. This has all the ingredients for a ‘luvverly’ night in the theatre!

The Importance of Being Earnest
A Ridiculusmus production
First up, Oscar Wilde’s shining lesson in comedy performed in its entirety by Jon and David. All nine characters. All by themselves.
This production is a bust-out hit everywhere it goes. Wilde’s play gleams with jewel-like clarity amidst the Ridiculusmus mayhem of virtuoso character turns and high-flying theatrical invention. It packed out Sydney Opera House for its brief season in 2006, and we’re grinning already in anticipation of its arrival at Belvoir St.
The Importance of Being Earnest was co-commissioned by barbicanbite05, London and Brisbane Powerhouse

Anatomy Titus Fall Of Rome
A Shakespeare commentary
by Heiner Müller
Translated by Julian Hammond
Directed by Michael Gow with John Bell
I am the knife which will slaughter heaven.
Heaven is full of blood. Soon it will snow.
In a powerful new co-production by Bell Shakespeare and Queensland Theatre Company, Michael Gow directs John Bell in the title role of Anatomy Titus Fall Of Rome: A Shakespeare Commentary, a reworking of Shakespeare’s bloodiest play Titus Andronicus, by German playwright and director Heiner Müller.
Set in Rome in the aftermath of war between the Romans and the Goths, Titus Andronicus, an honourable war general, returns home victorious only to find himself caught in a sordid web of unrest and upheaval, on both political and personal fronts. As Titus moves from triumph to tragedy through the shattering consequences of revenge, the message of the futility of war is resounding.
Heiner Müller was one of Germany’s greatest contemporary playwrights and the spiritual and creative heir to Bertold Brecht. Initially a star of the East German arts establishment he later fell from grace and his work was censored by the state, leading him to rework classic texts in order to explore current themes. He has written here a searingly provocative examination of the nature of violence, a sharply political work that speaks as much of our world today as of Ancient Rome. This is the Australian premiere of a rarely performed play which will resonate profoundly with a 21st Century audience.

Riverside Lyric Ensemble Inc presents
AIDA
The Musical
Based on the story from the classic Verdi opera, one of the most thrilling, romantic and tragic tales of all time, AIDA is a new musical brought to the stage by the team that produced Disney’s The Lion King. Featuring the pop legend Elton John's brilliant, modern pop score and the electrifying lyrics of Tim Rice, AIDA is a story of a forbidden love that never dies.
An epic tale of love, passion, loyalty and betrayal, it chronicles the love-triangle that consumes Aida (a Nubian princess stolen from her country and sold into slavery), Amneris (an Egyptian princess and Aida’s mistress) and Radames (the soldier who is betrothed to Amneris, yet falls in love with Aida). Also featured is the cunning Zoser (Radames’ father who is poisoning the Pharoah to make way for Radames to take the throne), and loyal Nubians Nehebka and Mereb (Radames’ servant).
Says Elton John: “AIDA is not opera. It's truly a pop musical with spoken dialogue and all kinds of recognizable song types: urban-based rhythm and blues, gospel inspired songs, ballads and, of course, Crocodile Rock songs!” Winner of four Tony Awards and with a Grammy Award-winning score, AIDA features such contemporary musical hits include ‘My Strongest Suit’, ‘Elaborate Lives’, ‘The Gods Love Nubia’, ‘Easy as Life’ and ‘Written in the Stars’.

Billy Budd
Benjamin Britten
Teddy Tahu Rhodes wowed audiences and won awards for performances from Don Giovanni to Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire. Now he makes his role debut as Billy Budd.
This internationally-acclaimed production, conducted by Richard Hickox and directed by Neil Armfield, returns to Sydney with John Wegner as Claggart and one of the world’s great Britten interpreters, Philip Langridge, as Captain ‘Starry’ Vere.
Billy is foretopman on the HMS Indomitable. His simple goodness incenses Claggart, the vindictive Master at Arms. It is up to Captain Vere to adjudicate between right and wrong, good and evil. If only it were that straightforward.
Using a huge orchestra and an all-male chorus, Benjamin Britten creates a score which is so simple, so evocative and yet, when the time comes, so overwhelming. Don’t miss this exceptional production.

The world’s first musical - and still one of the best - The Beggar’s Opera is the raucous tale of ladies' man Macheath and sweet Polly Peachum juggling love and deceit in the dirty underbelly of 18th Century London.
In a theatrical coup the opera is reimagined: writer Stephen Jeffreys (The Art of War, The Libertine) and celebrated British director Max Stafford-Clark shift the setting to a creaking convict ship bound for Australia. To pass the time, a group of Second Fleet convicts put on an opera set in the world they’ve left far behind, and will probably never see again.
The Convict's Opera is a unique co-production between Sydney Theatre Company and Out of Joint, Max Stafford-Clark's legendary touring theatre company.
Featuring a cast of talented actor-musicians drawn from Britain and Australia, The Convict’s Opera brings together the classic folk songs of the original with some modern musical surprises - and plenty of infamy, intrigue, fun and romance.

Sydney Theatre Company presents
The Women of Troy
By Euripides
Adapted by Barrie Kosky and Tom Wright
Troy is a ruin. The men are dead, most of the children are dead and the surviving women are herded behind wire, awaiting transportation or (hopefully) death.
Hecuba, their Queen, awaits her uncertain future haunted by memories, visions and prophecies. In a series of hallucinogenic episodes she is visited by her mad, blind daughter Cassandra; her grieving daughter-in-law Andromache and the woman who triggered the whole catastrophe, Helen.
One of the most powerful and compelling anti-war plays ever written, Euripides' tragedy reels with the consequences of destruction.
By distilling the essence of this masterpiece to reveal a disturbing and visceral chamber work, the award-winning team of Barrie Kosky and Tom Wright will once again focus their unique theatrical scrutiny on the realm of mythology illuminating its enduring connection to the contemporary world.
The defeated Queen Hecuba will be played by Robyn Nevin and, in a stroke of revelatory casting, Barrie will have Melita Jurisic portray all three of the other Trojan Women; Andromache, Helen and Cassandra.
Once again STC will play host to Barrie's extraordinary vision resulting not just in a thorough re-examination and re-invigoration of a classic, but of the possibilities of the theatrical form itself.
