George Frideric Handel
Opera Australia presents Handel’s wild and magical opera, Orlando, in a new production starring Italian contralto Sonia Prina.
Love or war? It is no easy choice for a warrior prince. But in spite of Zoroastro’s warnings to be ware the trials of love, the brave Orlando is struck down by an unrequited passion for Angelica. Orlando, the Renaissance hero, becomes mad, bad and dangerous to know. You can almost hear a beautiful mind falling apart as Handel pushes his instinctive sense of drama and his delicate lyricism to the extreme.
Sonia Prina comes to Sydney for the first time after acclaimed performances of this lovesick prince at the Salzburg Festival. She is joined by Rachelle Durkin as the bewitching Angelica, Tobias Cole as her lover Medoro, Hye Seoung Kwon as Angelica’s foil, Dorinda and Richard Alexander as Zoroastro, the voice of reason.

By Stephen Carleton
Xavier is a narcissist. A decidedly self-absorbed single man for whom middle age looms and the prospects of finding a psychosexually well-adjusted partner are beginning to fade.
His best friend, Bronwyn, a boozy fortysomething single woman, challenges Xavier to a duel: “Six weeks to bag a man! No ifs, no buts, no limits, no boundaries and no rules!”
Game on.
Bronwyn sets her sights on Satchel, Xavier’s flatmate, winner of ‘Barista of the Year’ three years running, and whose new ambition is to get on Big Brother. Xavier meanwhile takes the retro route, picking up with old flame, Jesse. There’s only one hitch... he’s engaged to marry Y’landah.
Packed to the brim with narcissists of every stripe, withering one-liners and wild farce, this politically incorrect comedy of manners promises to be one of the funniest nights you’ll have this year!

Cirque du Soleil
Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and nature.
Suspended in time between the past and the future, Dralion is a celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order: air, water, fire and earth. Innovation soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Dralion is a dynamic performance that transcends the boundaries of the imagination and leads us into a dreamscape with a new and sparkling perspective.

Gaetano Donizetti
Donizetti’s impassioned heroine must be one of the ultimate coloratura roles of the bel canto repertoire and the artist who takes it on is stepping into big shoes.
Presenting Emma Matthews in her role debut as Lucia di Lammermoor. Get ready to be moved by her heartfelt portrayal and thrilled by her pure, agile voice as it soars through the vocal pyrotechnics of this virtuosic role.
Donizetti's gothic tale of Highland skulduggery is the very stuff of opera. A Scottish nobleman plots to marry off his sister Lucia to a man of influence. Lucia, on the other hand, longs to marry Edgardo, the exiled Laird of Ravenswood. Contracts are signed and vows are exchanged but the wedding does not go according to plan.
Donizetti created his most memorable and demanding score in Lucia. The Act II sextet is a masterpiece of ensemble writing and Lucia’s mad scene, ‘Il dolce suono’, is an exhilarating vocal tour de force. To recreate John Copley’s gloriously atmospheric production Opera Australia has brought together an outstanding cast: joining the radiant Emma Matthews is American tenor Eric Cutler as Edgardo, José Carbó as the evil Enrico, Richard Anderson as Raimondo and who else but Maestro Richard Bonynge to conduct.

"You're asking me what's going to be in the Wharf Revue? Well, let me tell you. We have ordered a wide-ranging enquiry into the matter and the commissioner will be reporting back in 2011 so I'm not in a position to pre-empt those findings. But I can say this: at the end of the day, Revue 2008 will deliver a balanced package of world's best-practice, cutting-edge satire that Australian working families so desperately need." *
As Australia holds its breath waiting for the government's response to the Garnaut Review into Climate Change, the outrageously talented Wharf Revue team (now 25% ethanol) returns to deliver its ninth annual dose of razor-sharp hybrid satire, with eco-friendly characters, carbon-neutral sketches and recycled self-defecating humour.
* Update - This year's Wharf Revue will include:
The Sound of Rudd
Sister Kevin, having been placed with the Von Trapp working family, has a crisis of faith: can he fulfill his pre-election vows? He returns to the convent to seek the advice of Mother Keating of the Order of the Economic Rationalists.
Calling Dr Iemma
Is there a doctor in the lower house? Join Dr Iemma, Nurse Reba Meagher and the wacky staff of the Sussex St ER Department as they battle against the clock to resuscitate the terminal state of New South Wales.
Obama Rap
MC Obama hip-hops his way into history. He’s in da house… da White House.

Sydney Theatre Company presents Wharf 2LOUD

By Tommy Murphy
Saturn's Return is the latest production from the writer and director of Strangers in Between and Holding The Man.
Saturn has returned, and a moment of doubt changes everything. The universe conspires against Matt and Zara, and Zara is jettisoned into orbit.
Sex on drugs has become sordid, but the allure of the threesome is still tempting. The prospect of having children is no longer odious, but mortgages and responsibility remain objects of contempt. It's time for lock down. But who's playing?
Shifting perspectives on identity and Tommy Murphy's trademark comic flair combine to create a lively theatre of insight and ingenuity.

GIELGUD in BECKETT by BÉJART
An exclusive Australian season
6 performances only
Theatre Royal, Sydney, from 12 – 17 August 2008
After sell-out seasons in Europe, ballet icon Maina Gielgud returns to Australia to star in The Exquisite Hour, to be seen exclusively in Sydney at the Theatre Royal from 12 August.
This thrilling work, inspired by Samuel Beckett's play Happy Days, has been created and directed by world renowned choreographer Maurice Béjart.
A variation on the theme of Happy Days by Samuel Beckett, The Exquisite Hour (L'Heure Exquise) portrays an aging ballerina whose relentless determination to see the positive in everything is a way of denying the present. Béjart's vision is enhanced by strong imagery and former Principal Dancer, Paul DeMasson, plays a humorous and empathetic character who sustains the ballerina as she recalls glimpses from three phases of her life.
