Sydney Theatre Company and Out of Joint present

The Convict's Opera
By Stephen Jeffreys, adapted from The Beggar's Opera by John Gay

The world’s first musical - and still one of the best - The Beggar’s Opera is the raucous tale of ladies' man Macheath and sweet Polly Peachum juggling love and deceit in the dirty underbelly of 18th Century London.

In a theatrical coup the opera is reimagined: writer Stephen Jeffreys (The Art of War, The Libertine) and celebrated British director Max Stafford-Clark shift the setting to a creaking convict ship bound for Australia. To pass the time, a group of Second Fleet convicts put on an opera set in the world they’ve left far behind, and will probably never see again.

The Convict's Opera is a unique co-production between Sydney Theatre Company and Out of Joint, Max Stafford-Clark's legendary touring theatre company.

Featuring a cast of talented actor-musicians drawn from Britain and Australia, The Convict’s Opera brings together the classic folk songs of the original with some modern musical surprises - and plenty of infamy, intrigue, fun and romance.

Sydney Theatre Company presents

The Women of Troy
By Euripides
Adapted by Barrie Kosky and Tom Wright

Troy is a ruin. The men are dead, most of the children are dead and the surviving women are herded behind wire, awaiting transportation or (hopefully) death.

Hecuba, their Queen, awaits her uncertain future haunted by memories, visions and prophecies. In a series of hallucinogenic episodes she is visited by her mad, blind daughter Cassandra; her grieving daughter-in-law Andromache and the woman who triggered the whole catastrophe, Helen.

One of the most powerful and compelling anti-war plays ever written, Euripides' tragedy reels with the consequences of destruction.

By distilling the essence of this masterpiece to reveal a disturbing and visceral chamber work, the award-winning team of Barrie Kosky and Tom Wright will once again focus their unique theatrical scrutiny on the realm of mythology illuminating its enduring connection to the contemporary world.

The defeated Queen Hecuba will be played by Robyn Nevin and, in a stroke of revelatory casting, Barrie will have Melita Jurisic portray all three of the other Trojan Women; Andromache, Helen and Cassandra.

Once again STC will play host to Barrie's extraordinary vision resulting not just in a thorough re-examination and re-invigoration of a classic, but of the possibilities of the theatrical form itself.

The Narcissist
By Stephen Carleton

Xavier is a narcissist. A decidedly self-absorbed single man for whom middle age looms and the prospects of finding a psychosexually well-adjusted partner are beginning to fade.

His best friend, Bronwyn, a boozy fortysomething single woman, challenges Xavier to a duel: “Six weeks to bag a man! No ifs, no buts, no limits, no boundaries and no rules!”

Game on.

Bronwyn sets her sights on Satchel, Xavier’s flatmate, winner of ‘Barista of the Year’ three years running, and whose new ambition is to get on Big Brother. Xavier meanwhile takes the retro route, picking up with old flame, Jesse. There’s only one hitch... he’s engaged to marry Y’landah.

Packed to the brim with narcissists of every stripe, withering one-liners and wild farce, this politically incorrect comedy of manners promises to be one of the funniest nights you’ll have this year!

Optus presents

Dralion
Cirque du Soleil

Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its two main symbols: the dragon, representing the East, and the lion, representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and nature.

Suspended in time between the past and the future, Dralion is a celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order: air, water, fire and earth. Innovation soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Dralion is a dynamic performance that transcends the boundaries of the imagination and leads us into a dreamscape with a new and sparkling perspective.

Opera Australia presents

Lucia di Lammermoor
Gaetano Donizetti

Donizetti’s impassioned heroine must be one of the ultimate coloratura roles of the bel canto repertoire and the artist who takes it on is stepping into big shoes.

Presenting Emma Matthews in her role debut as Lucia di Lammermoor. Get ready to be moved by her heartfelt portrayal and thrilled by her pure, agile voice as it soars through the vocal pyrotechnics of this virtuosic role.

Donizetti's gothic tale of Highland skulduggery is the very stuff of opera. A Scottish nobleman plots to marry off his sister Lucia to a man of influence. Lucia, on the other hand, longs to marry Edgardo, the exiled Laird of Ravenswood. Contracts are signed and vows are exchanged but the wedding does not go according to plan.

Donizetti created his most memorable and demanding score in Lucia. The Act II sextet is a masterpiece of ensemble writing and Lucia’s mad scene, ‘Il dolce suono’, is an exhilarating vocal tour de force. To recreate John Copley’s gloriously atmospheric production Opera Australia has brought together an outstanding cast: joining the radiant Emma Matthews is American tenor Eric Cutler as Edgardo, José Carbó as the evil Enrico, Richard Anderson as Raimondo and who else but Maestro Richard Bonynge to conduct.
